Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to determine the changes in knowledge of hypertensive elederly regarding DASH diet at the elderly integrated healthcare.
Methodology: This study was conducted at the elderly integrated healthcare center in Central Katingan district, Central Kalimantan. A quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Purposive sampling technique was used to collect data. Self-administered questionnaires with questions related to the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet were used to collect data.
Findings: Most hypertensive elderly before education regarding DASH diet had poor (36,4%) and fair knowledge (40,9%). There was an increase in knowledge after being given education to good knowledge (59,1%). There was a significant difference in the average knowledge level before and after DASH diet education (p value <0.05).
Limitation: This study was not assessing any factors that could affect the elderly’s knowledge.
Contribution: Providing DASH diet education is expected to increase the knowledge of elderly people with hypertension so that it can play a role as a nonpharmacological therapy in the form of lifestyle modification led to decreasing blood pressure.
